University of Melbourne
This subject focuses on the relationship between culture and language, looking at the myriad of ways in which culture is embedded in language. Through analysis of how differences between English-speaking and Chinese-speaking cultures manifest within translation and interpreting scenarios, we position the translator/interpreter as a facilitator of intercultural communication, exploring the various strategies and decision-making processes available to them. By undertaking translation and interpreting tasks in a variety of challenging settings, students will strengthen their ability to mediate intercultural communication in the real world.
