University of Melbourne
This subject explores comparative constitutional law from a deliberately global perspective. It seeks to take account of the constitutional experience of all regions of the world including Asia, the Americas, Europe, Africa and Australasia. It thus provides an excellent platform on which to explore the substantive themes of the course and test a range of constitutional theories and practices against a global range of real-world examples. Key topics of general relevance chosen for the purposes of comparison include the separation of powers, socio-economic rights, judicial review, constitutional democracy and democratic erosion. The lecturers are leading constitutional scholars from Germany and South Africa respectively, who bring to the subject different bodies of knowledge and experience.
