University of Melbourne
This subject explores how law shapes the human relationship with the environment and animals. It also explores the work of lawyers to protect environmental and animal interests. The subject introduces students to a number of different ‘areas’ of law relevant to these questions including administrative, constitutional, human rights, torts, corporations and international law. Students will additionally hear from practitioners involved in social movement lawyering, climate law barristers, and activists, to better understand the ‘day to day’ work of lawyers engaged in protecting the environment, cultural heritage, and animals. This subject is targeted towards students with an interest in pursuing a career in social movement lawyering or environmental protection, as well as students who would like a broader understanding of the role of law in environmental problems and the climate crisis.
