University of Melbourne
Global Diasporas, Hellenic Cultures emphasises the global spread of Greek people in historical context to examine histories of migration, colonialism and transnationalism/globalisation. The subject looks at the changing meanings of “nation” and “home” as they relate to the politics of mobility, identity and belonging. To this end other global diasporic cultures are also examined which may include Italian, Lebanese, African, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, and Indigenous diasporas. Through interfaces like cinema, poetry, photography, and digital networks, the cultural productions of global diasporas are examined as sites of resistance and history-making. Providing a vantage point to understand how diasporas connect our streets, suburbs, and cities to global networks and histories, the subject prepares students to negotiate their place as informed participants in, and leaders of, tangible social change.
