French and Francophone Cultural Studies

to consolidate and enhance the overall language competencies that students from the beginner and intermediate streams have previously acquired in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be introduced to the rich history and diversity of the Francophonie, and invited to explore a series of culturally and linguistically diverse Francophone communities around the world. Through their research projects, the weekly reading, discussions and analysis of a wide range of authentic materials (such as short stories, graphic novels, articles, songs, documentaries, films, interviews, news clips, etc.), students will develop effective and appropriate learning and research strategies such that they become independent and competent users of French.

• 1Be able to use their knowledge of French to read, write, listen and speak confidently and independently on a given specific topic
• 2Be able to read and understand B1/B2 texts on a specific topic in French fluently, without recourse to translation
• 3Have learned to use their French reading skills independently to build up contextual information about what they are reading. This includes learning to use monolingual dictionaries and encyclopedias
• 4Develop their capacity to undertake independent and original research in French. This includes learning to use citations and references
• 5Be able to critically integrate their knowledge about French and Francophone cultures in their use of the language.
