University of Melbourne
This subject extends effective mathematics pedagogy beyond considering individual learners, to critically examine the roles of socio-ecological and cultural factors in facilitating effective mathematics education. These might include how mathematics fosters numeracy (i.e., mathematical literacy), how mathematics is embedded across the school curriculum, how teachers respond to value differences in class, what we can learn from how mathematics is valued and taught in different countries, how learning technologies are deployed, and more. This subject will empower us to be even more inclusive and equitable in fostering mathematics education of learners from diverse cultural backgrounds (including First Nations’ students, migrants and refugees), from rural and regional communities, from different socio-economic backgrounds, as well as for sustainable educational goals, and for thriving economies and citizenship.
