This subject extends and deepens what we understand about how mathematics is learnt at school, and how numeracy (i.e. mathematical literacy) is developed alongside. It emphasises how cognitive approaches to teaching should be complemented by fostering learners’ ‘want to learn’. Particular attention will be paid to cultivating learner affect and motivation, such as mathematical wellbeing, interest, efficacy, positive mindsets, and forms of learner engagement.
