English(es) in the Global Context

This subject examines the changing contours of English from a plurilingual perspective. Students will develop an understanding of the historical, social and political factors that have shaped the changing nature of English languages in a global and digital world. Students will apply a range of theoretical frameworks to examine diverse Englishes, recognising English as a pluricentric language that can enhance pedagogical and assessment practices. Other topics explored in this subject include: standard language ideology, linguistic features of varieties of English (such as Aboriginal English), and plurilingual practices in a digital context.
