The subject explores the use of multiple languages in contexts of cultural and linguistic diversity. It starts from examining the international debate on the nature and role of English in a globalised world, defining and discussing key concepts such as linguistic imperialism, language ideologies, language orientations and their impact on language education. Then it moves onto introducing and analysing the multilingual turn, and new conceptualisations of language and multilingual practices. The subject offers a range of theoretical and critical explorations combined with hands-on tasks to develop critical multilingual language awareness.
