to heighten students' general awareness of the Arabic language and to enhance overall language competencies students have previously acquired in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It also aims to enhance students' awareness of diverse sociocultural aspects of the Arabic language. Pulling these strands together, students will analyse texts from many different sources, paying attention to style, genre, and form. Students will learn about aspects of the history and the political, economic, and cultural development of the Arab World and sociocultural issues in the region. Students will do this through weekly analysis of various texts and audio-visual materials selected to expose students to current issues within the Arab world and to expose them to Arabic used in academia, the media, and the Internet. The class discussions allow for ideas to be critically analysed and debated. Students will independently conduct small-scale research.
