This subject explores the climatic theme of frostpunk – conceptually, metaphorically, structurally, and technologically – through a set of parameters (the brief). The technical focus will be on level design within the game environment, including mechanics and interface, implicit to the theme. Students will be introduced to the theory and design fundamentals of level design. Design challenges will involve exploring the aesthetics and atmospherics of climate. These include examining ecological dystopia, retrofuturism, survival and adaptation; exploring spatial qualities such as openness and scarcity; developing technical and creative skills in level design, narrative design, mechanics and art direction. Assignments align with industry norms for game development including game design documentation, game builds and pitch materials. Lectures, workshops, and online modules will introduce students to design theories, design techniques and digital tools related to the design challenge(s). Students will extend their learning of contemporary digital tools, including Unreal Engine and visual scripting though Blueprints.
