Musicology & Ethnomusicology
The Musicology & Ethnomusicology major is a rigorous program that prepares you to think and write about the aesthetics, significance, and meaning of music across diverse historical and cross-cultural contexts. Musicology & Ethnomusicology students acquire skills and knowledge to explore how people use music in constructing cultural and personal meaning, as well as to understand how gender, race and politics shape people’s musical lives. Intended learning outcomes On completion of this major, students should be able to: situate their research in the contemporary disciplinary contexts of musicology, ethnomusicology and/or popular music studies; articulate relationships between diverse forms of musical knowledge, musical practice and cultural contexts with consideration and academic rigour; engage critically and productively in dialogue within the music research community; employ critical and analytical skills in researching music-making using historiographical and/or ethnographic methods; collaborate and engage with other researchers and music-makers in diverse research contexts; uphold rigorous intellectual and ethical standards in conducting research and representing music-makers; communicate research findings in musicology, ethnomusicology and popular music studies with accuracy, clarity and integrity; apply critical intelligence, self-reflection and creative problem-solvin...
